Our studio manages a wide range of programs and focuses both on the relationship to place and human wellbeing, through pertinence in usage and taking care of time, space and light as central in our approach to architecture.

We consider our projects as being part of a design laboratory that explores the bonds between landscape, climate and architecture, in order to challenge those notions of technology, usage, and quality of life that, from the specific conditions of developing countries, can inform and be pertinent in a global context.

Founded in 1994 in Paris, since 2006 the studio is based in Lima,  pursuing its activity in France with the Parisian studio Atelier Nord-Sud.

Our transatlantic experience has been recognized by the 2018 Mies Crown Hall of the Americas Award and the first Oscar Niemeyer Prize, among other international awards. Our work has been acknowledged by the International Committee of Architectural Critics (CICA) with the 2013 Latin America Prize and  the Peruvian Architecture National Prize in 2014 and 2018.

Our projects have been exhibited and published worldwide. The Italian editor Lettera Ventidue published in 2012 a monographic book about our houses in the Peruvian desert coastline, presented at the 13th Venice Biennale. Barclay & Crousse participated at the main exhibition at the 16th Venice Biennale.

.@Worldarchitects ::: [#Arquitectas] #Sandra_Barclay named ‘architect of the Year’ 2018

SANDRA BARCLAY, PARACAS MUSEUM

As part of their 2018 Women in Architecture awards, The Architectural Review and The Architects’ Journal have announced Sandra Barclay as Architect of the Year and Gloria Cabral as the winner of the Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture.

The announcement was made at the Women in Architecture lunch held today at Claridge’s London, where Amanda Levete accepted her 2018 Jane Drew Prize and Madelon Vriesendorp her 2018 Ada Louise Huxtable Prize.

Sandra Barclay of Barclay & Crousse was selected for her work on Peru’s Museo de Sitio de Paracas, a replacement of a museum largetly destroyed in a 2007 earthquake. The new museum blends into the site’s desert landscape while preserving part of the original museum.

The jury said of the winning project: « Aware of the lack of control onsite and limited resources, the architects responded to the lack of context with a design that is both robust and simple, yet powerful, and even its man-made imperfection adds value to the building. »

Per AJ and AR, the Architect of the Year Award « recognizes excellence in design with an emphasis on a recently completed project. Candidates must be qualified architects in their country of study. They may be running their own practice, in a small design-led practice or a large commercial firm, in partnership or a director. »

Barclay co-founded Barclay & Crousse in 1994 in Paris with Jean Pierre Crousse. Since 2006, the firm has been based in Lima, Peru, with a branch office in Paris.

Architects shortlisted for the Architect of the Year Award also included Biba Dow, Dow Jones Architects (United Kingdom); Ángela García de Paredes, Paredes Pedrosa (Spain); and Stephanie Macdonald, 6a Architects (United Kingdom).
